Travel back to simpler days when business in Missouri was about the rushing of a stream over a dam and bridges were covered. Visitors to Bollinger Mill State Historic Site can learn how wheat and corn were ground into flour and meal in the massive four-story mill that dates to the Civil War era. Or they can stroll through Burfordville Covered Bridge, one of just four covered bridges that remain in Missouri. The site’s rustic setting offers ample picnicking and exploration opportunities along the Whitewater River. Both structures are in the National Register of Historic Places.According to the Missouri State Department of Natural Resources, "Want to fly your drone? There are no laws prohibiting drones on state park grounds, but we do ask that you keep it to the main, open day-use areas and be respectful of other visitors in the park. If you will be taking photos for professional use or sale, there would be a process to go through to gain approval for that.

Drone Flying Considerations
Is it worth flying a drone there?
Definitely! The site's combination of historical architecture and natural beauty makes it an attractive subject for aerial photography and videography. From the mill to the covered bridge to the surrounding landscape, you'd likely capture stunning visuals that would be difficult to achieve from the ground.
Am I legally allowed to fly a drone there?
Missouri State Parks, in general, have restrictions on drone usage to protect wildlife and ensure visitor safety and privacy. Therefore, you will need to seek specific permission from the Missouri State Parks administration before flying a drone at Bollinger Mill State Historic Site. Unauthorised drone flights could lead to fines and other penalties.
Do I need LAANC authorization?
Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) authorization is typically required if you're flying in controlled airspace, especially near airports. However, Bollinger Mill State Historic Site isn't near any major controlled airspace in Missouri, so LAANC authorization may not be necessary. It's always wise to check the FAA's B4UFLY app or the FAA's UAS Facility Maps to be sure.
Anything else I need to know?
1. Local Regulations: Respect local, state, and FAA regulations regarding drone usage. Always confirm the current rules as regulations can change.
2. Park Rules: Drones can disturb wildlife and other visitors, so if you do get permission, fly responsibly.
3. Weather: Check the weather conditions before you go. Wind, rain, and other weather conditions can affect drone flight.
4. Battery Life: Ensure you have enough battery power for a round-trip flight, considering potential delays.
5. Insurance: It’s always a good idea to have drone insurance to cover any possible damages or incidents.
6. Notice: It might be courteous to notify visitors or park staff when you plan to fly your drone to avoid surprising anyone.
In summary, while Bollinger Mill State Historic Site offers an enticing scenery for drone photography, you must seek the necessary permissions and adhere to all regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
