DESCRIPTION

Seven Magic Mountains is an art installation located in the Nevada desert, about 10 miles south of Las Vegas. Created by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, it features seven towering pillars of brightly painted boulders, each standing between 30 to 35 feet tall. The vibrant, stacked boulders create a striking contrast against the arid desert landscape, making it a popular spot for both photography and tourism.

Is it worth flying a drone there?
Visually, Seven Magic Mountains provides a stunning subject for drone photography and videography. Capturing the installation from an aerial perspective can yield unique and impressive shots that highlight the sculpture's vivid colors against the expansive desert backdrop.
Am I legally allowed to fly a drone there?
While Seven Magic Mountains is situated on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), it's important to be aware of any specific rules or restrictions about drone usage in the area. Generally, the BLM does not impose restrictions against drone flights unless explicitly stated within specific areas or sensitive sites.
However, drone pilots must adhere to FAA regulations when flying in U.S. airspace. Check for any temporary flight restrictions or notices to airmen (NOTAMs) that might affect drone operations in the area.
Do I need LAANC authorization?
The Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) is a collaboration between the FAA and private industry to provide near-real-time processing of airspace authorizations for Part 107 drone pilots. Whether you need LAANC authorization depends on the airspace classification around the Seven Magic Mountains location:
1. Class G Airspace:
- If the area is in Class G (uncontrolled) airspace, you do not need LAANC authorization to fly.
2. Controlled Airspace:
- If the area falls within controlled airspace (Classes B, C, D, or E), and if there's a nearby airport, you may need LAANC authorization to fly up to a certain altitude.
You can check the airspace classification using apps like AirMap, Kittyhawk, or the FAA's B4UFLY app.
Anything else I need to know?
- Responsible Flying: Always respect privacy and avoid flying over groups of people or busy roads. Ensure you always have a visual line of sight with your drone.
- Altitude Limits: Do not fly above 400 feet to remain compliant with FAA regulations.
- Wildlife and Environment: Be mindful of the surrounding environment. Avoid disturbing local wildlife or damaging the landscape.
- Signage & Rules: Pay attention to any posted signs around the installation that may provide additional rules or guidelines specific to drone operations.
- Permits: While not typically required for recreational use, if you intend to use your drone footage for commercial purposes, you may need a commercial use permit.
- Time of Day: Lighting can greatly affect drone photography, so consider the time of day for the best visuals (early morning or late afternoon often provides the best natural light).
By following these guidelines and staying informed about local and federal regulations, you can safely and legally capture remarkable drone footage of Seven Magic Mountains.
