REVIEW

Alabama currently has no restrictions on flying in state parks. Be cautious of manned aircraft, this area is uncontrolled airspace; however AL09 Cloudmont Airpark is near the falls.

DESCRIPTION

DeSoto Falls is a stunning and popular natural attraction located near the town of Mentone in DeKalb County, Alabama. The falls are part of DeSoto State Park and the Little River Canyon National Preserve. DeSoto Falls plummets about 104 feet into a basin, creating a picturesque and dramatic scene, especially after periods of significant rainfall. The surrounding area features lush forests, rocky outcrops, and a serene environment that makes it a favorite spot for visitors seeking natural beauty and a peaceful retreat.

Is it worth flying a drone there?
Absolutely. The dramatic drop of the falls and the surrounding landscapes make DeSoto Falls a fantastic location for aerial photography and videography. A drone can capture the grandeur of the falls from angles and heights that are impossible to achieve from the ground, offering a unique perspective on this natural wonder.

Am I legally allowed to fly a drone there?
As of the latest information available, recreational drone flying within DeSoto State Park and areas managed by the National Park Service, such as the Little River Canyon National Preserve, is generally prohibited without special permissions or permits.

Do I need LAANC authorization?
If you were legally allowed to fly a drone in DeSoto Falls, you would need to check if the area falls within controlled airspace designated by the FAA, which would indeed require you to seek Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) authorization. However, given the restrictions in place by park authorities, this point may be moot if drone operations are not permitted.

Anything else I need to know?
- Regulations and Restrictions: Always verify the current rules and regulations from authoritative sources before planning your drone flight. Regulations can change, and special permits might be available that were not previously an option.
- Environmental Protection: Respect wildlife and natural habitats. Loud noises and the presence of drones can disturb animals and other visitors. Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid flying in sensitive areas.
- Safety Considerations: Ensure your drone is in good working condition and be prepared for factors like wind, trees, and water, which can pose challenges.
- Check Local Guidelines: Contact DeSoto State Park or the Little River Canyon National Preserve administration offices directly to inquire about current drone policies and whether any special permits are available.
Always ensure you are operating within the confines of local, state, and federal laws when flying your drone to avoid fines, legal trouble, and ensuring the protection and enjoyment of natural environments for everyone.
