REVIEW
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently established requirements to register drones as well as a notification process to contact airports before operating a drone within a five nautical mile radius of an airport. In the Salt Lake valley, this includes the Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and South Valley Regional Airport (SVRA) in West Jordan, as well as Tooele Valley Airport (TVA) in Erda.
Facilities in the restricted areas include the Utah State Capitol, Utah State Offices, West High School, Vivint Arena and Jordan Landing. Click here for an interactive map of restricted areas. Click here for the commercial UAS operations map. The white area around SLC is an automatic no-fly zone. The allowable UAS altitude increases as the distance from SLC broadens.
Recreational owners who plan to fly drones within a five-mile radius of SLC, SVRA, or TVA must contact the Salt Lake City Department of Airports Operations Division at 801-531-4777 and provide the following information at least 24 hours in advance of operation:
Registration information for the device
Type of device
Time, date and duration of flight
Location (GPS coordinates) and altitude of operation
DESCRIPTION
Riverton City Park is a popular community park located in Riverton, Utah. It is known for its well-maintained open spaces, sports fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, walking paths, and other recreational facilities. The park serves as a central gathering place for local residents and often hosts a variety of events and community activities.
Drone Flying at Riverton City Park
1. Worth Flying a Drone: The aesthetic appeal and open spaces of Riverton City Park make it an attractive location for drone enthusiasts who want to capture scenic footage or simply enjoy flying their drones. However, the final decision on whether it's worth it will depend on your specific needs and interests.
2. Legal Permission: Whether you are legally allowed to fly a drone at Riverton City Park depends on several factors:
- Local Regulations: Check Riverton City's municipal code or contact city officials to determine if there are any local restrictions on drone flying within city parks.
- State Regulations: Utah's general drone laws should also be reviewed. While there are state guidelines, local jurisdictions can have additional rules.
- FAA Regulations: Consistency with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations is crucial.
3. LANCE Authorization: Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) is necessary if the park is within controlled airspace, generally near airports. You can check the UAS Facility Maps provided by the FAA to determine if you need LAANC authorization for flying your drone at Riverton City Park.
4. Other Considerations:
- Safety: Always prioritize the safety of people in the park. Avoid flying over crowds, and maintain a clear line of sight with your drone at all times.
- Privacy: Respect the privacy of park patrons. Avoid capturing footage that could infringe on someone's personal privacy.
- Park Usage: Be aware of the park’s usage patterns to avoid interfering with activities, events, or sports games.
- Altitude: Stay within the altitude limits set by the FAA, typically not exceeding 400 feet above ground level for recreational drones.
Steps to Take Before Flying
1. Research Regulations: Confirm local and state drone laws and ordinances.
2. Check Airspace Classification: Use apps like B4UFLY or the FAA's UAS Facility Maps to determine airspace classification and whether LAANC authorization is needed.
3. Get Authorization: If in controlled airspace, obtain LAANC authorization via an app like AirMap or Kittyhawk.
4. Pre-Flight Checklist: Conduct a pre-flight check of your drone and ensure weather conditions are suitable for flying.
By taking these steps, you can ensure a safe and legally compliant drone-flying experience at Riverton City Park.
